Lawrence James is the co-founder and Executive Director for the Grassroots Artists MovEment (G.A.ME), Inc. L as he's often called is honest, forthright, and dedicated to building the Hip-Hop community, the Black community, and the international community as a whole. He has been involved in politics ever since he was seven following after his mother who was a 60's teenage Black Panther organizer in NYC. L has since been involved with innumerable political and social justice campaigns. L. James began his Hip-Hop lyrical career at 15 but brought it to an end at 20 to utilize his skills to strengthen his community in the areas that was lacking.
L has been featured in various publications such as the Source and XXL magazines for exposing MTV's disrespect for Hip-Hop and for his commitment to artist rights, Hip-Hop culture and universal health access. L. James has spoke on various radio programs on issues dealing with health, Hip-Hop, labor, and youth leadership. He has appeared in countless publications such as the Daily Challenge, Caribbean Life, Village Voice, and the book Socialism & Democracy: Hip-Hop, Race, & Cultural Politics.
His inspirational work in healthcare and labor rights has been documented by U.S. Congress. At 26 yrs old, Mr. James was the youngest panelist on the topic of health disparities at last year’s National Hip-Hop Political Convention in Newark, New Jersey where he outlined and demonstrated solutions to building a healthcare network. Under his leadership an unprecedented international health initiative to treat communities in need of health care has been launched. In 2004, G.A.ME introduced New York City to the historical G.A.ME HealthCare Network.
Mr. James lectures throughout the year on “Hip-Hop & Labor” and holds workshops on building organizations and developing local political campaigns at various institutions. He continues to operate as Coordinator of Special Services for Assemblywoman Aurelia Greene in New York City where he builds strategic relationships and helps New Yorkers find solutions in housing, education, health and wellness, etc. In 2005, L. James became the youngest Fellow at the FAR Fund while developing the R.E.B.E.L Program (Rallying, Educating, & Building Effective Leadership). R.E.B.E.L is the latest component of G.A.ME, which prevents youth incarceration, especially amongst Blacks and Latinos and raises youth leadership to a new level.
